A little guidance

How to choose a necklace length.

A 16-inch necklace measures 40.6 cm, 18 inches measures 45.7 cm, and 20 inches measures 50.8 cm. Compare those lengths against your own neckline: your neck, the pendant and what you wear determine where the whole piece sits.

Start with a neckline you actually wear

Choose a familiar top before comparing lengths. Look at the space between its edge and the place you want the pendant to rest. A chain can look different against an open shirt, a round neck or a higher collar even when its measurement stays the same.

Use a mirror to check the front and the side. Then move normally and notice whether the pendant settles where you expected. A still illustration can help you compare positions, but it cannot reproduce how a necklace will move on your body.

Measure a chain you already like

If you own a necklace that sits well, open it and lay the chain straight on a flat surface without stretching it. Measure from one fastening end to the other, including the clasp. Note any extender separately so you can distinguish the shortest and longest settings.

When reading a product description, check what its stated measurement includes. The chain length and the distance a pendant hangs below it are separate details. The pendant’s height can change the lowest point of the finished necklace.

If you do not have a reference necklace, use a soft measuring tape or a loose piece of string to compare lengths. Hold the ends comfortably together, check the position, and measure the string flat. Avoid pulling it tight or fastening it around your neck.

Three lengths to compare

These are reference measurements, not fixed positions on every body. Each two-inch step adds about 5.1 cm to the chain’s total length; it does not move a pendant two inches straight down.

Necklace length reference
Chain lengthIn centimetersWhat to compare
16 inches40.6 cmA closer position toward the base of the neck.
18 inches45.7 cmA little more room around the collarbone area.
20 inches50.8 cmA lower position and more distance from the neck.

The conversions use 2.54 cm per inch, rounded to one decimal place. Body proportions and pendant size still determine the result. Our necklace-length illustration shows the relative change so you can compare it with your own measurement.

Leave room for the pendant

Consider the pendant as part of the length, rather than choosing a chain in isolation. A taller pendant adds more visible drop below the chain. Its size also changes how much space it occupies against the neckline.

If you are comparing two necklaces together, try both reference lengths at the same time. Check the space between their lowest points and whether the pendants meet when you move. A particular gap is a styling choice, not a universal rule.

A few common questions

Should I choose a 16 or 18-inch necklace?

Choose by position rather than by a standard size. A 16-inch chain is about 5.1 cm shorter than an 18-inch chain, so it sits closer on the same person. Compare both lengths with a loose measuring tape or string, wearing the neckline you have in mind. Neither length has one fixed position on every body.

Does necklace length include the pendant?

In this guide, necklace length means the chain measured from one fastening end to the other, including the clasp. The pendant’s height is a separate measurement. Check the specific seller’s description because the way a necklace is measured can differ.

Does adding two inches make the pendant sit two inches lower?

No. Those two inches are added around the full chain, not directly below it. The change in the pendant’s position depends on the curve of the chain, your neck and the pendant itself. Compare the lengths on yourself instead of subtracting them as a vertical drop.

The details to check before choosing

Look for the actual chain length, extender range and pendant dimensions. Photographs of the specific piece help you understand its proportions, but the fit on another person remains a reference. Keep your own measurements alongside the product details.
